Ontario HST Calculation Formulas

Two formulas every Ontario business owner needs — adding HST to a price and removing HST from a total.

Adding HST to a Price

HST = Amount × 0.13
Total = Amount × 1.13
Example: Invoice amount is $2,400.

HST = $2,400 × 0.13 = $312.00
Total = $2,400 × 1.13 = $2,712.00

Breakdown: $120 GST + $192 PST = $312 HST

Removing HST from a Total (Reverse)

Pre-tax = Total ÷ 1.13
HST = Total × 0.115044
Example: Receipt shows $2,712 total.

Pre-tax = $2,712 ÷ 1.13 = $2,400.00
HST = $2,712 × 0.115044 = $312.00

Shortcut: multiply total by 0.115044 for HST portion.

Key HST Rules for Ontario Businesses

What every Ontario business owner needs to know about registration, filing, and recovering HST costs.

📋

HST Registration Threshold

Ontario businesses with taxable revenues exceeding $30,000 in any single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters must register for HST with CRA and begin collecting 13% on taxable sales.

Voluntary registration is available under $30,000 — beneficial during startup years when HST paid on expenses can be recovered through Input Tax Credits.

Ontario HST Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common Ontario HST questions from business owners across Ontario.

How much is HST in Ontario in 2026?
Ontario HST is 13% in 2026 — unchanged since it was introduced on July 1, 2010. The 13% rate combines the 5% federal GST and 8% Ontario provincial portion into a single harmonized tax. On a $100 purchase, HST is $13.00 for a total of $113.00. The rate applies uniformly across all Ontario cities including Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Hamilton, Brampton and London.
How do I calculate HST on an invoice in Ontario?
To add HST to an invoice amount, multiply the pre-tax amount by 0.13 to get the HST, then add it to the original amount. Formula: Total = Amount × 1.13. Example: $3,500 invoice × 1.13 = $3,955.00 total. The HST portion is $455.00 — made up of $175.00 GST and $280.00 Ontario PST.
How do I remove HST from a total amount (reverse HST)?
To find the pre-tax price from a HST-included total, divide the total by 1.13. Formula: Pre-tax = Total ÷ 1.13. Then HST = Total − Pre-tax. Quick shortcut: multiply the total by 0.115044 to extract just the HST portion. Example: $1,356 ÷ 1.13 = $1,200 pre-tax. HST = $1,356 − $1,200 = $156.00.
When does a small business in Ontario need to register for HST?
Ontario businesses must register for HST once their taxable revenues exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over any four consecutive quarters. Once you exceed this threshold, you must register within 29 days and begin collecting 13% HST on all taxable sales. Voluntary registration is allowed below $30,000 and is often beneficial as it lets you claim Input Tax Credits on business expenses.
What is an Input Tax Credit and how does it reduce my HST owing?
An Input Tax Credit (ITC) lets HST-registered Ontario businesses recover the 13% HST paid on business expenses. ITCs are claimed on your HST return and reduce the net HST you remit to CRA. For example, if you collected $2,600 in HST from clients but paid $800 in HST on business expenses, you remit only $1,800 to CRA. Eligible expenses include office rent, equipment, professional services, advertising and vehicle costs.
Does HST apply to commercial rent in Ontario?
Yes — commercial rent in Ontario is subject to 13% HST. Landlords renting to businesses must collect and remit HST on commercial lease payments. Tenants who are HST-registered can claim the HST paid on commercial rent as an Input Tax Credit. Residential rent, however, is HST-exempt.
What is the Ontario new housing HST rebate?
Buyers of newly built homes in Ontario can claim a rebate of 75% of the 8% provincial HST portion, up to a maximum of $24,000. The full rebate applies to homes priced at $400,000 or under. Between $400,000 and $450,000 the rebate is proportionally reduced, and homes over $450,000 receive no provincial rebate. A separate federal GST new housing rebate of up to $6,300 is also available for qualifying homes.
