AFFORDABLE Accounting & Tax Services for Newcomer Business Owners

Arriving in Canada and starting a business at the same time is a lot: a new tax system, a first return where only part of the year counts, questions about foreign income and assets you left behind, and a CRA that expects you to know the rules from day one. Most newcomers either overpay because they report their world income the wrong way, or miss the credits and refunds they are actually entitled to in their first year.

We make it simple. A Registered CPA walks you through everything — registering your business number, choosing between a sole proprietorship and incorporation, filing your first part-year return correctly, reporting foreign income and T1135 assets, and claiming newcomer credits like the GST/HST credit and Canada Child Benefit. We handle the bookkeeping, GST/HST, payroll and year-round tax planning so you can focus on building your new life. We serve newcomer business owners across Ontario and Canada. AFFORDABLE flat fees. No hourly billing.

Accounting & Tax Service That Understands Newcomers

Starting fresh in a new country means learning a whole new tax system while you build your business. We have guided hundreds of newcomers from their first landing to a fully registered, compliant Canadian business — explaining every step in plain language, with clear fixed fees and no surprises.

🏢

Business Setup & Incorporation

Business Number, GST/HST and payroll accounts, plus sole-proprietor vs corporation guidance.

📄

First-Year & World-Income Tax

Your part-year newcomer return filed correctly, with foreign income handled the right way.

🌎

Foreign Income & T1135

Foreign assets, tax treaties and foreign tax credits so you are never taxed twice.

💰

Newcomer Credits & Benefits

GST/HST credit, Canada Child Benefit and every credit you qualify for in year one.

Stay Compliant and Minimize Your Tax as a Newcomer

The CRA holds newcomers to the same deadlines as everyone else — and expects foreign income and assets to be reported from your date of entry. Staying compliant and paying the least legal tax go hand in hand, and we keep every obligation on schedule while claiming every credit and deduction you are entitled to.

On-Time Filing

Your first personal return, any business or corporate (T2) return, GST/HST and payroll remittances are all prepared and filed before every CRA deadline. As a newcomer you are taxed on world income only from the day you became a Canadian resident, and we file that part-year return correctly so you never overpay, miss a credit or face a late-filing penalty in your first year.

🛡

CRA Compliance

From residency determination to foreign-asset reporting on Form T1135, we keep your filings fully compliant with the Canada Revenue Agency. We set up your SIN-linked CRA My Account, respond to review letters about residency or foreign income, and represent your business directly with the CRA — so a new tax system never becomes a source of stress.

📈

Maximized Credits & Deductions

We claim every credit and deduction available to you: the newcomer GST/HST credit and Canada Child Benefit, foreign tax credits that prevent double taxation, business deductions, Capital Cost Allowance and an optimized salary-dividend mix once you incorporate. Getting your first years right sets the foundation for lower tax as your business grows.

Accounting & Tax Services Tailored for Newcomer Business Owners

Each service, explained in full, so you know exactly what is included and how it keeps your new Canadian business compliant and your tax as low as the rules allow.

  • We determine the exact date you became a Canadian tax resident and file your first-year part-year personal return, taxing world income only from that date forward.
  • We prepare and file your T2 corporate return within six months of year-end, handling the short first-year period and applying the small business deduction.
  • We track the capital you injected from your home country as a shareholder loan on Schedule 50, so you can withdraw it tax-free later instead of paying tax on your own funds.
  • We report foreign income earned after arrival, convert it to Canadian dollars, and claim foreign tax credits and treaty relief so the same income is not taxed twice.
  • Where you have non-resident shareholders or make payments abroad, we handle Part XIII withholding at the correct reduced treaty rates.
  • We set up cloud bookkeeping in QuickBooks or Xero connected to your Canadian bank and card feeds, with receipt-capture tools, so your records are current and paperless from the start.
  • We record the funds you transferred from abroad to start the business as a proper shareholder loan or capital contribution, so the money is documented and can be repaid to you without tax.
  • We handle multi-currency transactions and conversions cleanly, which matters when you still receive payments or pay suppliers in your home country’s currency.
  • We build a chart of accounts tailored to your industry and separate your business activity from personal spending, so your filings are accurate and audit-ready.
  • We deliver clear monthly reports in plain language, so even if Canadian accounting is new to you, you always understand how your business is doing.
  • We tell you the income level at which incorporating starts to save tax for your situation, so you neither incorporate too early nor leave the small business deduction’s deferral on the table.
  • Once you incorporate, we model the salary-versus-dividend mix that builds RRSP room and CPP entitlement while keeping your overall tax low.
  • We plan how and when to repay the shareholder loan from the capital you brought to Canada, giving you tax-free access to your own money as the business generates cash.
  • We make sure you claim the newcomer credits — the GST/HST credit via Form RC151 and the Canada Child Benefit via Form RC66 — and advise on when your RRSP and TFSA room begins.
  • We build cross-border planning around any income, property or family that remains in your home country, using tax treaties to keep your total tax as low as legally possible.
  • If your corporation or first personal return is unfiled, we file all outstanding years and negotiate penalty relief before the CRA issues arbitrary assessments.
  • We reconstruct missing income and expenses from bank records, invoices and financing agreements when the books fell behind during your first busy year in Canada.
  • Where past foreign income or assets were never reported, we use the CRA’s Voluntary Disclosures Program to correct it with relief from penalties before the CRA makes contact.
  • We prioritize the oldest unfiled year first to stop late-filing penalties and daily compounding interest from growing while we bring every year current.
  • We claim the deductions and newcomer credits you missed in those prior years, so you are not simply reporting income and paying maximum tax on it.
  • We monitor your revenue against the ,000 small-supplier threshold and register you for GST/HST at the right time, or voluntarily earlier when claiming input tax credits benefits you.
  • We recover the GST you pay at the border on imported goods and equipment as an input tax credit, money many newcomer importers do not realize they can claim back.
  • We claim input tax credits on your taxable business costs — supplies, software, professional fees and equipment — so you recover the HST you pay on business purchases.
  • We compare the Quick Method against the regular method and choose the one that leaves the most cash in your business, and confirm whether what you sell is taxable, zero-rated or exempt.
  • We file your GST/HST returns on your annual or quarterly schedule, on time, so you avoid CRA interest and penalties while you are still learning the system.
  • We correct first-year returns filed on the wrong residency basis — full-year instead of part-year, or the wrong date of entry — through amended returns that restore compliance.
  • We fix foreign income that was omitted or converted incorrectly, and file any missed T1135 Foreign Income Verification Statements to avoid the steep penalties.
  • We rebuild the shareholder-loan account where capital you brought from abroad was mistaken for income, so repayments to you are tax-free.
  • We correct HST that was charged, collected or remitted incorrectly in earlier periods and recover input tax credits that were missed.
  • We rebuild the numbers from source records so your corrected returns are accurate, consistent and defensible.
  • When the CRA questions your residency status or the date you became a resident, we assemble the documentation of your residential ties and respond on your behalf.
  • We handle CRA reviews of foreign income and T1135 filings, presenting your records and treaty positions clearly so the review is resolved without unnecessary reassessment.
  • We respond to GST/HST and payroll queries with organized reconciliations, demonstrating your new business’s compliance to the CRA.
  • Where penalties arose from an honest first-year mistake, we file RC4288 Taxpayer Relief requests documenting the circumstances to maximize penalty cancellation.
  • We represent your business directly with the Canada Revenue Agency, so a new tax system never becomes a source of stress.
  • We prepare CSRS 4200 compilation (Notice to Reader) financial statements that Canadian banks and lenders require — especially valuable when you have no Canadian credit history yet.
  • Your statements show equipment at net book value, the shareholder loan for capital you injected, and retained earnings, giving lenders an accurate picture of your business.
  • We classify revenue and costs under the correct GIFI codes so the Notice to Reader matches your T2 return exactly.
  • We include the required CSRS 4200 disclosures plus notes on revenue recognition and related-party transactions, so the statements withstand lender review.
  • We deliver your statements promptly after year-end, so a financing, lease or credit application is never held up.
  • We handle the full incorporation of your Ontario or federal business, including the NUANS name search, articles of incorporation and initial registrations, so you can start billing quickly.
  • We explain the director-residency rules — an Ontario corporation has no Canadian-resident director requirement, while a federal corporation requires 25% resident Canadian directors — and structure your incorporation around your status.
  • We register your corporation for a CRA Business Number, GST/HST, payroll and, where needed, WSIB accounts so your business is compliant from day one.
  • We design a share structure that fits your family and any partners who arrived with you, supporting future income splitting and growth.
  • For owners moving from a sole proprietorship, we coordinate the section 85 rollover of business assets into the corporation at elected amounts to defer any gains.
  • We reconstruct your books from your arrival date forward, rebuilding months of missing entries from bank statements, credit cards, cash receipts and the funds you transferred from your home country to start trading.
  • We build a clean opening balance sheet for your first Canadian year, separating personal settlement spending from genuine business costs so nothing family members paid for is quietly lost.
  • We clean up your CRA Business Number program accounts, adding or correcting the GST/HST, payroll and corporate income tax accounts that were registered late, opened on the wrong date or never opened at all.
  • Where you paid family or staff before a payroll account existed, we rebuild the payroll records, calculate the source deductions owing and bring every remittance and T4 slip current.
  • With the books rebuilt we file your outstanding first Canadian returns on the correct part-year basis, reporting world income only from the date you became a resident — monthly bookkeeping from $100.
  • If you arrived in Canada still owning a US corporation, we prepare its Form 1120 federal return and the state filings, coordinating the year-end with your new Canadian corporate reporting.
  • Where your Canadian company sells into the United States without a permanent establishment there, we file a protective treaty-based Form 1120-F so the treaty position is claimed and documented properly.
  • We file Form 5472 for every reportable transaction between you and your US entity, because a missed or late 5472 carries a $25,000 penalty per form that newcomers rarely see coming.
  • US LLCs are treated differently by the CRA than by the IRS, and we plan around that hybrid mismatch so the US tax you actually pay still supports a Canadian foreign tax credit.
  • We handle both sides of the border in one place, so US income you keep earning after arrival is reported on your Canadian return with foreign tax credits and treaty relief applied.
  • We file your application on Form RC199 with the CRA Voluntary Disclosures Program, presenting the full history of what was missed in your first Canadian years and why it happened.
  • We test your situation against the five acceptance conditions first — voluntary, complete, involving a penalty, information at least one year overdue, and payment of the estimated tax owing.
  • Where foreign income earned after you became a resident went unreported, we bring those years current under the program and claim the foreign tax credits that reduce what you actually owe.
  • Where the total cost of your specified foreign property exceeded $100,000 CAD and no Form T1135 was filed for a year after your first resident year, we correct that through the program.
  • We position your file on the general track for penalty and partial interest relief rather than the limited track, and act before the CRA contacts you, because voluntariness is lost once they do.

Case Studies: Newcomer Business Accounting & Tax

Mississauga New PR – IT Consulting Startup

Problem: A software professional landed as a permanent resident in July, earned foreign salary before arriving and freelance consulting income after, and had no idea how to report a split year or whether he could incorporate. He was worried his overseas income would be taxed twice and that he was already missing CRA deadlines.

Solution: We confirmed his residency date, filed a part-year return taxing only his post-arrival world income, and applied foreign tax credits on income already taxed abroad. We incorporated an Ontario corporation, registered his Business Number, GST/HST and payroll accounts, and applied for his first-year newcomer credits.

Results:

  • First-year return filed correctly, no double taxation
  • GST/HST credit and CCB approved and paid
  • Incorporated and billing clients within two weeks
  • Shareholder loan set up for tax-free repayment

Toronto Start-up Visa Founder – Foreign Assets

Problem: An entrepreneur who arrived on the Start-up Visa program brought significant savings to fund his company and still owned property and investments abroad worth well over $100,000. He was anxious about the T1135, unsure what to disclose, and afraid of penalties for getting foreign reporting wrong.

Solution: We explained the first-year T1135 exemption and set up correct foreign-asset reporting for the following year. We documented the capital he injected as a shareholder loan, applied treaty relief and foreign tax credits on his overseas investment income, and structured his corporation cleanly from the start.

Results:

  • Foreign assets reported correctly, penalties avoided
  • No double taxation on overseas investment income
  • Injected capital tracked for tax-free withdrawal
  • Clean corporate structure ready to raise funding

Brampton Newcomer Family – Retail Store

Problem: A family opened a convenience store within months of arriving, with no Canadian credit history, no bookkeeping system and a stack of unopened CRA letters. They had crossed the HST threshold without registering and were falling behind on filings while learning the language and the system.

Solution: We cleaned up and rebuilt their books, registered them for GST/HST from the correct date, and caught up their overdue filings. We set up simple monthly bookkeeping with receipt capture, recovered input tax credits on inventory and equipment, and applied for the family’s newcomer benefits.

Results:

  • Fully caught up and CRA-compliant
  • HST input tax credits recovered on startup costs
  • Canada Child Benefit approved for the family
  • Stress-free monthly bookkeeping in plain language

Newcomer Business Accounting & Tax FAQs

Do I pay Canadian tax on income I earned before I moved to Canada?
Generally no. As a newcomer you become a Canadian tax resident on the date you establish significant residential ties — usually when you arrive to settle. From that date forward you are taxed on your world income, but income earned before you became a resident is not taxed in Canada (though it may affect the calculation of certain credits). This is why filing an accurate part-year return matters so much in your first year: report the wrong period and you can easily overpay. We determine your exact residency date and file your first return correctly. First-Year Filing →
How do I file my first tax return as a newcomer to Canada?
Your first return is a part-year resident return covering the portion of the year after you became a resident. Personal amounts like the basic personal amount are prorated for the days you were here, foreign income earned after arrival is reported and converted to Canadian dollars, and newcomer credits are claimed. Because the CRA has no prior return on file, some credits and benefits must be applied for manually rather than assessed automatically. We prepare the whole package — the return, the credit applications and your CRA My Account setup — so your first year is done right. Book a Consultation →
Do I have to report my foreign income and assets to the CRA?
Once you are a Canadian tax resident, you report your world income — including foreign employment, business, rental and investment income earned after you arrived. Separately, if the total cost of your foreign property (bank accounts, shares, real estate held for investment and more) exceeds $100,000 CAD, you must file Form T1135, the Foreign Income Verification Statement. Helpfully, there is an exemption from the T1135 for the year you first become a resident. We determine what you need to report, claim foreign tax credits so nothing is taxed twice, and keep you onside the CRA’s strict foreign-reporting rules. Foreign Reporting Help →
Can a newcomer or non-resident own a corporation in Canada?
Yes. There is no citizenship or residency requirement to own shares in a Canadian corporation, so newcomers, work-permit holders and even non-residents can incorporate and own a business here. The nuance is director residency: an Ontario corporation has no Canadian-resident director requirement (the old 25% rule was removed in 2021), while a federal corporation still requires at least 25% of directors to be resident Canadians. We recommend the right jurisdiction and structure for your immigration status and business goals. Incorporation Services →
What is a Business Number and how do I register one?
A Business Number (BN) is the nine-digit identifier the CRA uses for your business, with program accounts added to it for GST/HST (RT), payroll (RP), corporate income tax (RC) and import/export (RM). You need it to charge HST, run payroll, file corporate tax and import goods. We register your BN and open exactly the program accounts your business needs, so you are set up correctly with the CRA from day one and not scrambling to register after you have already started operating. Business Setup →
Do newcomers qualify for the GST/HST credit and Canada Child Benefit?
Yes, and these are valuable in your first years. The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment, and the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a monthly tax-free payment for families with children under 18. As a newcomer you generally must apply for both rather than wait for them to appear automatically — the GST/HST credit using Form RC151 and the CCB using Form RC66 with the newcomer income schedule. We complete these applications as part of your first-year filing so you start receiving every payment you qualify for. Newcomer Credits →
Should I set up a sole proprietorship or a corporation as a newcomer?
It depends on your income, your risk and your plans. A sole proprietorship is simple and cheap to start, with business income reported on your personal return, and is often right in the very early days. A corporation is a separate legal person that offers liability protection and a tax deferral through the small business deduction, and usually makes sense once your business earns more than you need to live on. As a newcomer you should also weigh director-residency rules and how you funded the business. We run the numbers and recommend the structure that fits your situation. Get Advice →
How does tax residency work when I arrive in Canada?
Canadian tax residency is based on residential ties, not just immigration status. You generally become a resident on the day you establish significant ties — a home, a spouse or dependants here, and secondary ties like a driver’s licence, bank accounts and health coverage. From that date you are taxed on world income and can claim newcomer credits. Getting the date right is important because it sets what you report and what you can claim. We assess your ties, confirm your residency date and file accordingly, and we can help if the CRA later questions it. Book a Consultation →
What foreign assets do I have to report on the T1135?
The T1135 covers “specified foreign property” whose total cost exceeds $100,000 CAD — this includes foreign bank accounts, shares of foreign companies, interests in foreign trusts, foreign real estate held for investment, and debts owed to you by non-residents. It does not include personal-use property such as a home you live in or a vacation property for personal use, nor property held inside a registered plan. Importantly, you are exempt from the T1135 for the year you first become a resident. We assess your holdings, apply the first-year exemption and file the T1135 when required so you avoid the substantial penalties for missing it. T1135 Help →
Can a tax treaty help me avoid being taxed twice?
Often yes. Canada has tax treaties with many countries that prevent the same income from being fully taxed in both places. In practice this usually works through foreign tax credits — you claim a credit on your Canadian return for tax already paid abroad on the same income — and through treaty rules that assign taxing rights and set reduced withholding rates on cross-border payments like dividends. The details depend on your home country’s treaty with Canada. We apply the correct treaty and foreign tax credits so your total tax is as low as the rules allow. Cross-Border Planning →
I brought money from my home country to start my business. Is it taxed?
Bringing your own savings into Canada to fund a business is not itself taxable income — it is capital. The key is to document it properly. When you put money into your corporation, we record it as a shareholder loan, which means the company can repay that amount to you later tax-free instead of you paying tax on your own funds. Without proper records, those repayments can be mistaken for income. We set up the shareholder loan account correctly from the start and track it every year, protecting your access to your own capital. Bookkeeping Setup →
How much does newcomer business accounting and tax cost?
Everything is an AFFORDABLE flat fee, never hourly, so you always know the cost up front — which matters when you are managing a move and a new business. A first-year part-year personal return starts at $250, incorporation and CRA setup from $400 plus government fees, a T2 corporate return from $400, and monthly bookkeeping from $100. Foreign income and T1135 reporting is quoted based on complexity. Your exact fee depends on your situation, and because it is fixed there are no surprises.
