Why Ottawa Corporations Choose Gondaliya CPA for Corporate Tax Filing

Ottawa is Canada's national capital and one of the country's most economically diversified cities with over 1,017,000 residents and more than 15,000 registered businesses spanning federal government contracting, technology, defence, professional services, healthcare and bilingual commerce. As the seat of the federal government, Ottawa's economy is uniquely shaped by the Government of Canada's procurement system. Kanata North, Canada's largest technology park, houses over 540 technology companies employing more than 36,000 workers.

Ottawa corporations face unique compliance risks: PSB reclassification for single-client federal contractors (rate jumps from 12.2% to 33%), SR&ED claims for Kanata North technology companies (35% refundable credit), inter-provincial income allocation for Ontario-Quebec border operations and management fee documentation for professional corporations. We file every T2 with the documentation that prevents Ottawa TSO reviews from escalating. Flat-fee from $400. Ottawa CPA Services.

We document the four-part test for every at-risk Ottawa contractor.

📝

Proactive tax planning for Ottawa businesses. Salary vs. dividend structuring, CCA timing, SBD threshold management, passive income monitoring and inter-provincial income allocation for Ontario-Quebec border operations.

📈

CRA Audit Representation

📅

Inter-Provincial Allocation (ON/QC)

Ottawa corporations with employees or offices in Gatineau or Quebec must allocate taxable income between Ontario and Quebec using Schedule 5. Incorrect allocation results in overpaid provincial tax. We prepare Schedule 5 for every cross-border Ottawa-Gatineau corporation.

Corporate Tax Filing in Ottawa

T2 corporate tax returns for Ottawa corporations. CCA optimized for automotive and manufacturing. AFFORDABLE flat-fee pricing.

1

T2 Corporate Tax Return

Complete T2 preparation with every schedule your Ottawa corporation needs, including PSB analysis and inter-provincial allocation.

  • Prepare the T2 corporate income tax return with all required schedules including Schedule 1 (net income reconciliation), Schedule 4 (loss carryback), Schedule 8 (CCA) and Schedule 50 (shareholder information).
  • Map financial statement data onto Schedule 100 (balance sheet) and Schedule 125 (income statement) through matched GIFI coding.
  • Confirm CCPC status and apply the Small Business Deduction (12.2% combined rate on first $500,000 of active business income).
  • File electronically with CRA and provide confirmation of filing within 24 hours.
  • Include the director's personal T1 return at no additional charge for all T2 clients.
2

Automotive and Clean Tech CCA

Ottawa has the highest concentration of PSB reclassification risk in Canada.

  • Assess every single-client federal government contractor for PSB risk under the four-part test: control of work, ownership of tools, financial risk and ability to subcontract.
  • Document that the contractor controls their own schedule, uses their own equipment, hires subcontractors independently and bears financial risk of project non-delivery.
  • Prepare a contemporaneous PSB analysis file before CRA asks. Retroactive documentation is far less effective than proactive evidence.
  • File the T2 at the 12.2% SBD rate with full supporting documentation. If CRA challenges, respond with the pre-built PSB defence file.
  • File Notices of Objection when CRA issues PSB reclassification assessments and pursue resolution through the appeals process.
3

Corporate Tax Planning

Kanata North's 540+ technology companies generate the highest volume of SR&ED claims in Ontario outside of Toronto.

  • Assess SR&ED eligibility for SaaS development, cybersecurity research, AI/ML algorithm design, cleantech engineering and defence technology prototyping.
  • Prepare the T661 technical narrative demonstrating technological uncertainty and systematic investigation, not just routine feature development.
  • Calculate eligible expenditures including software developer salaries, algorithm design costs, cloud infrastructure for R&D environments and subcontracted development.
  • File the SR&ED claim with the T2 to claim the 35% refundable investment tax credit for qualifying Ottawa CCPCs.
  • Respond to CRA SR&ED reviewer inquiries with technical documentation supporting the systematic investigation claim.
4

SR&ED Tax Credits

Proactive planning that reduces tax payable and manages Ottawa-specific compliance risks.

  • Structure salary vs. dividend compensation to minimize combined corporate and personal tax based on income level and RRSP room.
  • Manage the $500,000 SBD threshold and passive income grind for Ottawa corporations with investment portfolios.
  • Prepare Schedule 5 inter-provincial allocation for Ottawa-Gatineau corporations to optimize the Ontario-Quebec tax split.
  • Evaluate holdco structures for Ottawa professional corporations to separate investment income and provide creditor protection.
  • Plan around PSB risk for federal contractors by documenting multiple revenue sources and independent business indicators.
5

CRA Audit Representation

When CRA Ottawa TSO contacts your corporation, we handle everything.

  • Respond directly to CRA Ottawa TSO on your behalf for PSB reviews, SR&ED audits, management fee challenges and inter-provincial inquiries.
  • Prepare organized documentation packages with PSB four-part test evidence, SR&ED technical narratives and Schedule 5 calculations.
  • Represent your Ottawa corporation through PSB reclassification reviews, SR&ED eligibility audits and management fee deduction challenges.
  • File Notices of Objection when CRA issues PSB reclassification or denies SR&ED claims, and pursue resolution through appeals.
  • CRA audit representation is included FREE for all T2 corporate tax filing clients. No additional fee. We handle Ottawa TSO directly.
6

T2 Amendments and Prior Year Catch-Up

Ottawa's unique geography adjacent to Gatineau, Quebec requires inter-provincial income allocation for many corporations.

  • Prepare Schedule 5 inter-provincial allocation for corporations with a permanent establishment in Quebec (office, warehouse or employees in Gatineau).
  • Allocate taxable income between Ontario and Quebec based on gross revenue and salaries attributed to each province.
  • Correct prior years where Schedule 5 was not filed and 100% of income was taxed in Ontario, potentially recovering overpaid provincial tax.
  • Coordinate Ontario and Quebec payroll source deduction obligations for employees working on both sides of the provincial border.
  • Ensure optimal provincial tax allocation considering the rate differences between Ontario and Quebec at various income levels.

Case Studies: Corporate Tax Filing in Ottawa

IT Consulting Corp, Kanata (PSB Reclassification Defence)

A Kanata IT consulting corporation had been filing T2 returns at the 12.2% SBD rate for four years while deriving 100% of revenue from a single federal government department. CRA issued a PSB reclassification notice increasing the corporate rate to 33% and denying all deductions except salary. Our review documented that the contractor controlled their own schedule, used their own equipment, hired subcontractors independently and bore financial risk of project non-delivery. We filed a Notice of Objection with supporting evidence. Ottawa CPA Services →

PSB reclassification reversed. $137,000 reassessment vacated in full.

SaaS Company, Kanata North (SR&ED Credit Recovery)

A Kanata North cybersecurity SaaS company had never claimed SR&ED in its first three years despite spending $480,000 annually on software development, threat detection algorithm design and automated penetration testing platform engineering. The founder assumed SR&ED was only for hardware R&D in a lab. Our review identified $1,440,000 in eligible expenditures across three years and filed T661 forms for each year.

$504,000 SR&ED refund. 35% refundable credit on three years of eligible R&D.

Bilingual Consulting Firm, Downtown Ottawa (Inter-Provincial + Holdco)

A bilingual management consulting firm headquartered in downtown Ottawa with three employees working from a Gatineau satellite office had been paying Ontario provincial tax on 100% of income. Schedule 5 inter-provincial allocation reduced the Ontario allocation to 72% and allocated 28% to Quebec. We also established a holdco to receive management fees and separate investment income from active business income. Corporate Tax Filing →

$18,400 annual tax savings. Inter-provincial allocation corrected + holdco implemented.

Federal Defence Contractor, Ottawa West (PSB Defence + CCA)

A defence technology contractor in Ottawa West with two federal government clients and one private sector client received a PSB reclassification notice from CRA Ottawa TSO. The corporation had invested $260,000 in specialised testing equipment classified under Class 8 (20%). We defended the PSB challenge by documenting the multiple revenue sources and independent business indicators, reclassified the equipment to Class 43 (30%) and filed T2 amendments for two prior years.

PSB challenge defeated. $12,800 CCA refund on reclassified equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions: Corporate Tax Filing in Ottawa

How much does corporate tax filing cost for an Ottawa small business?
Gondaliya CPA charges a flat fee starting from $400 including HST for T2 corporate tax return preparation and CRA filing. The director's personal T1 return and CRA audit support are both included at no extra charge. There is no hourly billing. You receive an exact flat fee before we begin. Under our 60-Day Fees-Matching Policy, we match any lower written quote from a licensed Ontario CPA firm for the same scope of work. Know Your Exact Fee →
When is the T2 corporate tax return due for a December 31 year-end?
For a corporation with a December 31, 2025 fiscal year-end, the T2 return must be filed by June 30, 2026. The balance of tax owing is due March 31, 2026 for Canadian-Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs). Filing late when a balance is owing attracts a penalty of 5% of the balance plus 1% per month plus CRA interest on any unpaid balance. Please contact us immediately if your Ottawa corporation has outstanding unfiled T2 returns.
Does Gondaliya CPA have a physical office in Ottawa?
Yes. Our Ottawa office is at 2090 Neepawa Ave a314, Ottawa, ON K2A 3L6. We serve clients across downtown Ottawa, Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven, Orléans, Gloucester and the National Capital Region. All corporate tax services are also available 100% virtually through our TaxDome portal. Ottawa CPA Services →
What is a Personal Services Business and why should Ottawa contractors care?
A PSB is a corporation where the shareholder-employee would reasonably be regarded as an employee of the client rather than an independent contractor. CRA aggressively targets single-client federal government IT and consulting corporations in Ottawa. PSB reclassification increases the tax rate from 12.2% to 33% and eliminates most deductions. The four-part test (control, tools, financial risk and subcontracting ability) must be documented before CRA asks. We assess PSB risk for every Ottawa federal contractor client.
Can Ottawa technology companies claim SR&ED?
Yes. Kanata North SaaS, cybersecurity, AI, cleantech and defence technology companies conducting systematic investigation including custom software development, algorithm design, threat modelling, engineering prototyping and process innovation qualify for the 35% refundable SR&ED credit. We assess SR&ED eligibility for every Ottawa technology client. SR&ED Assessment →
What is the Small Business Deduction and does my Ottawa corporation qualify?
The Small Business Deduction reduces the federal corporate tax rate from 15% to 9% on the first $500,000 of active business income for Canadian-Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs). Combined with Ontario's 3.2% small business rate, qualifying Ottawa CCPCs pay a combined rate of just 12.2%, saving up to $30,000 per year compared to the 26.5% general rate. Most owner-operated Ottawa corporations qualify.
Does my Ottawa corporation need Schedule 5 for Ontario-Quebec allocation?
If your corporation has a permanent establishment in Quebec (an office, warehouse or employees regularly reporting to work in Gatineau or Quebec), you must file Schedule 5 to allocate taxable income between Ontario and Quebec. Failing to file results in 100% Ontario taxation, which may result in overpaid provincial tax. We prepare Schedule 5 for every cross-border Ottawa-Gatineau corporation.
What documents do I need to provide for T2 filing?
If you are an existing bookkeeping client, you do not need to provide anything additional. We already maintain your books. For non-clients, we require: year-end trial balance or financial statements, bank statements for all accounts, loan and credit card statements, inventory listing (if applicable), capital asset additions and dispositions, shareholder loan transactions and T4/T5 summaries if payroll or dividends were issued.
How does the 60-Day Fees-Matching Policy work?
If you receive a lower written quote from any licensed Ontario CPA firm for the same scope of work within 60 days of engaging our services, we match that quote. The quote must be from a licensed CPA Ontario firm (not a bookkeeper or tax preparer), must be in writing and must cover the same services. We have 100% trust in our pricing because we are already the most AFFORDABLE licensed CPA firm in Ottawa.
How do I schedule a consultation?
You can book a free consultation online at any time using the scheduling link on this page or by calling us directly at 647-212-9559. During the consultation, we discuss your corporation's specific situation, confirm the scope, identify deduction opportunities (CCA, SR&ED, Clean Tech ITC) and provide a fixed-fee quote with a delivery timeline before any work begins. No obligation and no charge. Book Free Consultation →
