Timeline of a T2 Filing in Canada

From fiscal year-end to CRA Notice of Assessment. Every step, every deadline, and what your CPA does at each stage. A complete walkthrough for Canadian business owners.

A T2 corporate tax filing takes 8 steps from year-end to CRA confirmation: close the books, reconcile accounts, prepare financial statements, calculate corporate tax, complete GIFI schedules, file the T2 electronically, pay any balance owing, and receive the Notice of Assessment. The entire process takes 4 to 8 weeks for a prepared business.

The T2 Filing Process Has Two Deadlines, Not One

Most business owners think there is one T2 deadline. There are two. The payment deadline comes first: 2 months after your fiscal year-end (3 months if your corporation qualifies for the SBD and had taxable income under $500,000 in the prior year). The filing deadline comes second: 6 months after your fiscal year-end. Miss the payment deadline and CRA charges compound daily interest. Miss the filing deadline and CRA adds a late-filing penalty on top of the interest.

Fiscal Year-EndTax Payment DueT2 Filing Due
December 31February 28 (March 31 if SBD)June 30
March 31May 31 (June 30 if SBD)September 30
June 30August 31 (September 30 if SBD)December 31
September 30November 30 (December 31 if SBD)March 31

Pay First, File Second: CRA charges interest from the payment deadline, not the filing deadline. For a December 31 year-end, interest starts March 1 even though the return is not due until June 30. Estimate and pay early to stop the interest clock.

8-Step T2 Filing Timeline

Based on a December 31 fiscal year-end. Adjust dates for your corporation's specific year-end.

1

Close the Books

January (Month 1)

Record all December transactions. Process final invoices, payments and adjustments. Post year-end journal entries for accruals, prepaid expenses and depreciation. The books must be complete before anything else can begin.

  • Final bank reconciliation for December
  • Record all outstanding invoices and bills
  • Accrue expenses incurred but not yet billed
  • Reverse prior-year accruals as needed
2

Reconcile All Accounts

January to February (Month 1-2)

Every balance sheet account reconciled to supporting documentation. Bank accounts, credit cards, loans, HST, payroll liabilities, shareholder loan, intercompany balances and retained earnings.

  • Bank accounts matched to statements
  • Credit cards reconciled to year-end statements
  • Shareholder loan account verified with withdrawals/repayments
  • HST account reconciled to filed returns
  • Payroll liabilities confirmed to T4 totals
3

Prepare NTR Financial Statements

February (Month 2)

Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Notes to Financial Statements prepared from the reconciled trial balance. NTR (Notice to Reader) is the standard engagement for most small businesses. CRA requires financial statements with every T2.

  • Balance Sheet with assets, liabilities and equity
  • Income Statement with revenue, COGS and expenses
  • Notes disclosing accounting policies and significant items
  • Retained earnings continuity schedule
  • NTR from $250/year at Gondaliya CPA
4

Calculate Corporate Tax

February (Month 2)

Federal and Ontario tax calculated from the financial statements. Small business deduction applied on first $500,000 of active income. CCA (depreciation) optimized. Loss carryforwards and carrybacks applied. Instalments credited. Net tax owing or refund determined.

  • Federal tax at 9% (SBD) or 15% (general)
  • Ontario tax at 3.2% (SBD) or 11.5% (general)
  • CCA schedules for all asset classes
  • Prior-year losses applied to reduce current tax
  • Instalments paid during the year credited
5

Pay Balance Owing

By February 28 (or March 31 if SBD eligible)

The payment deadline is 2 months after year-end (3 months for SBD-eligible CCPCs). Pay the estimated balance owing now to stop interest from accruing. Even if the T2 is not finished, pay the estimate. You can adjust after filing.

  • Pay via CRA My Business Account or bank payment
  • Interest rate: 10% compounding daily from day after deadline
  • Overpayment refunded after assessment
6

Complete GIFI Schedules and T2 Return

March to April (Month 3-4)

GIFI (General Index of Financial Information) maps every financial statement line to CRA codes. T2 schedules completed: Schedule 1 (net income reconciliation), Schedule 8 (CCA), Schedule 50 (shareholder info), Schedule 100-141 (GIFI) and others as needed.

  • Schedule 1: book-to-tax adjustments
  • Schedule 8: CCA claims by asset class
  • Schedule 50: shareholder information
  • Schedule 100-141: GIFI balance sheet and income statement
  • Schedule 125: income statement detail
7

File Electronically with CRA

By June 30 (6 months after year-end)

The T2 is filed electronically using CRA-certified software. CRA issues an electronic confirmation number immediately upon receipt. Most corporations are required to file electronically (mandatory for corporations with gross revenue over $1 million, voluntary for all others but strongly recommended).

  • Filed via CPA using TaxCycle or similar certified software
  • Confirmation number received within minutes
  • Late-filing penalty: 5% + 1%/month up to 12 months
  • Repeat penalty: 10% + 2%/month up to 20 months
8

Receive Notice of Assessment

4 to 8 weeks after filing

CRA processes the return and issues a Notice of Assessment (NOA). The NOA confirms the tax owing, any adjustments, credits applied and the final balance. If CRA makes changes, you have 90 days to file a Notice of Objection. Keep the NOA with your corporate records.

  • NOA arrives in CRA My Business Account and by mail
  • Confirms assessed tax matches filed amount (or adjustments)
  • Refund issued if overpaid (direct deposit in 2-4 weeks)
  • 90-day objection window if CRA changes your return

Pro Tip: Start bookkeeping cleanup the week after year-end. The earlier your books are clean, the earlier your CPA can file. Early filing means early refunds and zero risk of penalties. Bookkeeping Services →

Case Study: Mississauga Corp Filed 2 Months Early and Received a $4,200 Refund Before Competitors Even Started

A Mississauga IT services corporation with a December 31 year-end engaged us for monthly bookkeeping. Books were clean by January 7. Financial statements completed by January 18. T2 filed electronically on February 3. CRA issued the Notice of Assessment on February 28. The corporation received a $4,200 refund (from quarterly instalment overpayments) by direct deposit on March 8. Most businesses with the same year-end had not even started their bookkeeping by that date. Early filing also meant the refund was reinvested into Q1 operations, improving cash flow during the slowest quarter. Get Started →

People Also Ask: T2 Filing Timeline

How long does it take to file a T2?
4 to 8 weeks from year-end for a business with clean books. If bookkeeping is behind, add the catch-up time. With monthly bookkeeping in place, most T2s are filed within 4 to 6 weeks.
What is the T2 filing deadline?
6 months after your corporation's fiscal year-end. December 31 year-end: T2 due June 30. The payment deadline is earlier: 2 months (or 3 for SBD-eligible CCPCs). T2 Filing →
What is the T2 payment deadline?
2 months after fiscal year-end for most corporations. 3 months after year-end if the corporation claimed the SBD and had taxable income under $500,000 in the prior year. Interest starts the day after this deadline.
What happens if I file my T2 late?
Penalty: 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month for up to 12 months. If you had a late-filing penalty in any of the preceding 3 years, the penalty doubles: 10% plus 2% per month up to 20 months.
What happens if I pay my T2 late?
CRA charges compound daily interest at the prescribed rate (currently 10%) from the day after the payment deadline. Interest accrues even if the return itself is filed on time.
Do I need financial statements for a T2?
Yes. CRA requires Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Notes with every T2 filing. NTR (Notice to Reader) financial statements from $250/year at Gondaliya CPA.
What are GIFI codes?
General Index of Financial Information. CRA codes that map every line of your financial statements to the T2 return. Schedules 100 to 141 contain the GIFI data. Your CPA prepares these.
What is Schedule 1 on the T2?
Net Income for Tax Purposes reconciliation. Adjusts accounting net income to taxable income by adding back non-deductible expenses (meals at 50%, penalties, personal expenses) and deducting items like CCA.
What is Schedule 8 on the T2?
Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) schedule. Calculates tax depreciation for each asset class: vehicles, equipment, computers, furniture, leasehold improvements and intangibles.
Can I file my T2 myself?
Technically yes, but it requires financial statements, GIFI mapping, CCA schedules, multiple elections and certified tax software. Errors lead to reassessments and penalties. Most owners use a CPA.
Is electronic filing mandatory for T2?
Yes for corporations with gross revenue over $1 million. All other corporations are strongly encouraged to file electronically. Paper filing causes processing delays of 8 to 16 weeks.
What documents do I need for my CPA to file the T2?
Bank statements, credit card statements, loan statements, invoices, receipts for major expenses, payroll records, prior year NOA, articles of incorporation, and access to your bookkeeping software.
How long does CRA take to process a T2?
Electronically filed: 4 to 8 weeks for the Notice of Assessment. Paper filed: 8 to 16 weeks. Refunds via direct deposit arrive 2 to 4 weeks after the NOA is issued.
What is a Notice of Assessment?
CRA's confirmation of your filed T2. Shows assessed tax, adjustments, credits applied and final balance. If CRA changes anything, the NOA explains the difference. You have 90 days to object.
Can I file my T2 before the payment deadline?
Yes. Filing early is always better. The sooner you file, the sooner CRA processes the return and the sooner you receive any refund. Early filing also eliminates penalty risk entirely.
What if my corporation has no activity?
You still must file a nil T2 return. CRA expects a return every year from every active corporation. Failure to file even a nil return triggers a demand to file and eventual arbitrary assessment.
What is a nil T2?
A T2 filed with zero revenue, zero expenses and zero tax. Required for dormant corporations. Still needs financial statements (showing nil balances) and GIFI schedules.
How do instalments work?
If your corporation owed more than $3,000 in federal tax in the prior year, CRA requires monthly or quarterly instalment payments during the current year. These are credited against the final T2 balance.
What if I overpaid instalments?
CRA refunds the overpayment after the T2 is assessed. Refund via direct deposit takes 2 to 4 weeks after the NOA. The overpayment earns no interest from CRA.
Do T4 and T5 slips need to be filed before the T2?
T4 and T5 slips are due February 28. The T2 is due 6 months after year-end. For a December 31 year-end, T4/T5 are due before the T2. The T4/T5 amounts must match what is reported on the T2.
What is the shareholder loan account?
Tracks amounts the owner takes from or puts into the corporation that are not salary or dividends. Must be reconciled before filing. Unreturned loans over one year-end are taxed personally under Section 15(2).
What is CCA?
Capital Cost Allowance. Tax depreciation on business assets. Calculated on Schedule 8 of the T2. Each asset class has a prescribed CRA rate. CCA reduces taxable income and therefore tax owing.
Can I carry losses back?
Yes. Non-capital losses carry back 3 years and forward 20 years. A loss carryback generates a refund of tax paid in a prior profitable year. Filed using Schedule 4 on the T2.
What if CRA reassesses my T2?
CRA can reassess within the normal reassessment period: 3 years for CCPCs, 4 years for other corporations. If you disagree, file a Notice of Objection within 90 days of the reassessment. Objections →

At Gondaliya CPA, T2 filing starts from $1,500 for corporations under $100K revenue (includes NTR financial statements). AFFORDABLE flat fees. No hourly billing. Know Your Exact Fee →
Does my bookkeeper file the T2?
A bookkeeper prepares the books. A CPA prepares the financial statements and files the T2. Both roles are needed. At Gondaliya CPA, we handle both bookkeeping and T2 filing.
Is the HST return part of the T2?
No. HST/GST is a separate return filed on its own schedule (annually, quarterly or monthly). The T2 is only for corporate income tax. HST Filing →
What happens to unfiled T2s?
CRA issues a demand to file. If ignored, an arbitrary assessment. Then penalties and interest on the inflated amount. Then collection actions including bank garnishment. Past Account Cleanup →
