Tax Accountant for Farms in Ontario and Across Canada
We use the ITA section 28 cash method deliberately rather than by accident, set the mandatory and optional inventory adjustments so one good crop year does not tax you twice over, test whether farming is your chief source of income before a section 31 restricted farm loss takes the deduction away, put your buildings and fences in Class 6 at 10% instead of Class 1 at 4%, carry milk, egg and poultry quota in Class 14.1, keep your Farm Business Registration current with Agricorp so you keep the 25% farm property tax class, and get the $1.275M exemption and the rollover to your children lined up years before the transfer. Whether you run a cash crop operation, a dairy, a beef or hog barn, or an orchard or greenhouse, we handle the inventory, program and HST refund accounting — with AFFORDABLE flat fees.
AFFORDABLE Farm Tax Accountant
Farming is the one business the Income Tax Act treats differently almost all the way through, and most farms never get the benefit of it. You are allowed to compute income on the cash method under section 28, which virtually no other business may do, and that single choice decides which year a crop taxes you in. Sitting on top of it are the mandatory and optional inventory adjustments, which let you move income between a year the bins were full and a year they were not. Get those wrong and you pay tax on a crop you had not sold; get them right and the tax follows the money. The same doubling runs through the rest of the file: your sales are zero-rated so you file GST34 in a refund position, but the custom combining you do for a neighbour is a taxable service at 13%. Your buildings and fences belong in Class 6 at 10%, not Class 1 at 4%. At Gondaliya CPA, we specialize in the farming regime rather than treating a farm as an ordinary business, providing AFFORDABLE flat-fee support that keeps you CRA-compliant and stops you paying more tax than you owe.
As a farm accountant, we work with cash crop operations, dairy farms, beef and hog barns, and orchards and greenhouse growers across Ontario, whether you trade as a sole proprietor, a partnership or a corporation, with year-round support rather than a once-a-year scramble. We tell you plainly what you can deduct, what you cannot, and how the farm gets to the next generation intact.
Let us handle the numbers so you can focus on the crop, the herd and the weather you cannot control.

Accounting That Understands How a Farm Actually Works
Running a farm comes with tax rules no other business gets and traps no other business faces. Your income can be computed on cash, your losses can be restricted, your land and quota carry an exemption most owners never reach, and a crop in the bin at year-end is a tax decision rather than a fact. At Gondaliya CPA, we understand that reality and provide practical, trade-focused solutions across Ontario.
Stay Compliant and Minimize Your Farm Tax
For a farm, staying onside with CRA and Agricorp and paying the least legal tax are the same job. We keep every filing on schedule while claiming every input, machinery and building dollar the return allows, so nothing is missed and nothing invites a reassessment.

Why Choose Our Accounting Services for Farms?
Tax Planning — The Farming Regime
We know the rules only farming gets: the section 28 cash method, the inventory adjustments, section 31 restricted farm losses, Class 6 buildings and fences at 10% and Class 14.1 quota. We protect the $500,000 Small Business Deduction.
Consulting — Field & Enterprise Bookkeeping
Our bookkeeping costs seed, fertilizer, chemical and fuel against the crop and the acre, records the coloured fuel split as it happens, and separates zero-rated sales from taxable custom work.
CRA Representation — Hobby Farm & Personal Use
When CRA questions whether you are farming, or tests the split on fuel, the truck and the farmhouse, we prepare the response and pursue relief on Form RC4288 where a prior error caused the penalties.
Bookkeeping — Lending & Succession
We build the statements Farm Credit Canada underwrites against and get the $1.275M exemption and the rollover to your children lined up years before the farm actually changes hands.

Accounting & Tax Services Tailored for Farms

- We prepare your T2 with GIFI on Schedule 100 and Schedule 125, separating grain and oilseed sales, livestock and cull sales, custom work income and program payments onto their correct lines so CRA’s automated matching does not misread your file.
- We claim capital cost allowance on Schedule 8 with tractors, combines and milking equipment in Class 8 at 20%, frame and metal-clad farm buildings, fences and greenhouses in Class 6 at 10%, and farm trucks in Class 10 at 30%.
- We carry milk, egg and poultry quota in Class 14.1 at 5% rather than expensing it or leaving it off the schedule entirely, because quota is often the single largest asset on a supply-managed balance sheet.
- We report AgriStability and AgriInvest receipts in the right year and test whether a program payment is income under ITA paragraph 12(1)(x) or a reduction of capital cost under subsection 13(7.1), because the answer moves real tax between years.
- We reconcile the return to your GST34 filings every year, because a farm sells zero-rated product and files in a refund position, and figures that disagree between the two are among the fastest files CRA pulls for review.
- We set up AgExpert Analyst or QuickBooks Online with a field and enterprise structure, so seed, fertilizer, chemical and fuel land against the crop and the acre that consumed them rather than in one undifferentiated input pool.
- We record the coloured fuel split as it happens, because the Ontario Fuel Tax Act exemption covers eligible farm equipment and not the licensed road truck, and an unrecorded split is an assessment waiting to happen.
- We separate custom work performed for neighbours from your own production, because that income is a taxable service at 13% while your grain and livestock sales are zero-rated, and the two cannot sit on one sales line.
- We track machinery repairs and parts against each unit rather than one repairs account, so a combine costing more in downtime and parts each season shows up while you can still decide whether to trade it.
- We capture every input invoice, elevator settlement and drying ticket through Dext and reconcile monthly, keeping the six years of records ITA section 230 requires and making sure no input tax credit is lost to a missing bill.
- We set up farm payroll in Wagepoint, withholding income tax, CPP and EI and remitting on the PD7A by the 15th of the following month, because CRA’s late-remittance penalty on source deductions climbs to 10%.
- We handle payroll for workers arriving under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program, because the Labour Market Impact Assessment, the housing obligation and the withholding all have to line up before the first crew lands.
- We apply the Ontario Employment Standards Act exemptions covering employees engaged in the primary production of listed commodities, so you are not paying overtime and holiday pay the statute does not actually require of a farm.
- We settle WSIB coverage before the first hire rather than after an injury, because a farm workplace with augers, power take-off shafts and livestock is the last place an employer wants to discover it was never registered.
- We file your T4 slips and T4 Summary by the last day of February and reconcile them to the PD7A remittances actually made, so a farm that scales its crew for harvest never generates a penalty for a mismatch.
- Grain, oilseeds, livestock, raw milk, eggs and fresh produce sold for food are zero-rated, so you collect no tax on your main revenue line while recovering the tax on everything you bought to produce it.
- Because your sales are zero-rated and your inputs are not, a farm normally files GST34 in a refund position, and a farm that has been quietly paying rather than claiming has been leaving real money with the government.
- Custom combining, spraying or trucking performed for a neighbour is a taxable service at 13%, not a zero-rated agricultural sale, and it is the single most common place a farm gets its HST reporting wrong.
- We claim the input tax credits on seed, fertilizer, crop protection, fuel, repairs, parts and equipment, which on a cash crop operation is the whole reason the return is worth filing on time every period.
- We review whether a particular machine is zero-rated as prescribed farm equipment before the invoice is paid, rather than assuming either answer, because the tax treatment of a major purchase changes the cash flow around it.
- We use the ITA section 28 cash method deliberately, because farming is one of the very few businesses allowed to compute income on cash rather than accrual, and that choice is the strongest timing tool you have.
- We set the optional and mandatory inventory adjustments each year so a strong crop year and a weak one do not swing your tax bill far beyond what the operation actually earned across the two.
- We test whether farming is your chief source of income before claiming a loss, because ITA section 31 restricts a farm loss to $2,500 plus half the next $30,000, a maximum of $17,500, where it is not.
- We set the salary-versus-dividend mix for an incorporated farm, paying enough T4 salary to build RRSP room while the balance flows as dividends, so combined tax stays near the 11.2% (from July 1, 2026) Ontario small-business rate rather than 53.53%.
- We time machinery, bin and tile drainage spending against your fiscal year-end so the 20% Class 8 and 10% Class 6 rates give the largest first-year deduction against a year the crop actually paid.
- We reconstruct grain settlements, livestock sales, milk cheques and program payments from bank deposits, elevator records and marketing board statements across your unfiled years, rebuilding the six years of records ITA section 230 requires.
- Late filing costs 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month up to twelve months, so we file your oldest unfiled return first to stop the penalty compounding and limit the arrears interest CRA charges you.
- We rebuild the inventory adjustments for each unfiled year under the section 28 cash method, because those numbers decide which year a crop actually taxed you in and no catch-up filing is defensible without them.
- We rebuild the capital cost pools so missed allowance on Class 8 machinery, Class 6 buildings and fences and Class 14.1 quota is recovered rather than lost along with the years themselves.
- We file a Voluntary Disclosures Program application on Form RC199 before CRA contacts you, because a disclosure accepted under the general program cancels penalties in full and gives roughly 50% interest relief on the older years.
- When CRA questions whether you are farming or running a hobby farm, we answer with the acreage, the production records, the marketing history and the business plan, because that finding drives every section 31 loss you claimed.
- We defend the personal-use allocation on fuel, the farm truck, the farmhouse and utilities with the records to support it, because a mixed farm and residence property is the split CRA tests first on a farm file.
- We answer inventory adjustment queries with the crop and livestock records behind the numbers, because moving a loss year into a profit year under the cash method is exactly the timing question a reviewer will probe.
- When CRA opens a full audit, we manage the file and answer the income, expense and capital cost allowance queries inside the deadlines, so a one-year review does not expand across the three prior years CRA may reopen.
- We file the Notice of Objection within 90 days of a reassessment and pursue taxpayer relief on Form RC4288, cancelling penalties and interest that can top $15,000 where a prior accountant’s error caused them, protecting your right to the Tax Court.
- We prepare the CSRS 4200 compilation engagement financial statements plus the net worth statement Farm Credit Canada and the banks require before funding the operating loan that carries your inputs from spring to harvest.
- Your compiled statement of financial position presents land, quota, machinery and bins at net book value alongside the operating loan, which is how a lender underwriting against asset values rather than earnings actually reads a farm.
- A land or quota purchase is underwritten against those statements, and a farm bidding on a neighbouring parcel without compiled figures loses time it does not have while the seller talks to somebody else.
- We build the statement of operations with crop, livestock, custom work and program revenue classified consistently across two years and tied to the return filed with CRA, so the lender accepts the file without a second request.
- We deliver the compiled statements within 30 days of receiving your records and the year’s tax figures, because an operating loan renewal or a land deal collapses when the file is not produced in time.
- We model whether incorporating your farm actually pays, because roughly the 11.2% Ontario small-business rate against a personal rate reaching 53.53% only matters on the profit you leave in the business rather than draw out.
- We complete the section 85 rollover on Form T2057, transferring machinery, quota, inventory and goodwill into the corporation at elected amounts, deferring the capital gain a straight sale of those assets would trigger.
- We think hard about whether the land goes in, because qualified farm or fishing property held personally and shares of a family farm corporation reach the $1.275M exemption by different routes with different tests.
- We open the corporation’s CRA Business Number, HST and payroll accounts within the first 30 days and confirm the Farm Business Registration with Agricorp moves with the entity, so the farm property tax class is not lost.
- We set the first fiscal year-end up to 53 weeks after incorporation, choosing a date outside harvest so the inventory count and the cash method adjustments happen when somebody is actually available to do them.
- We rebuild months or years of neglected books from bank deposits, elevator settlements, input invoices and equipment contracts, so an operation that let its records slide through two hard seasons gets a clean ledger.
- We reconstruct the zero-rated and taxable split across the backlog, separating grain and livestock sales from custom work, because that split drives every GST34 return in the period and the refunds that follow from it.
- We recover the input tax credits buried in unentered seed, fertilizer, chemical, fuel and parts invoices, because on a cash crop operation an unfiled year can hide five figures of credits the farm has already paid.
- We rebuild the Class 8, Class 6, Class 10 and Class 14.1 asset schedules and reconcile payroll across the caught-up months, so an accurate return can be filed without guessing at a lost year.
- We rebuild the inventory position at each year-end so the cash method adjustments can be set properly, rather than leaving a crop in the bin unrecorded and the tax landing in whichever year the ticket was cashed.
- Where you own farmland or equipment in the United States, we determine whether that holding creates a US filing obligation and prepare the returns, applying the Canada-US treaty so the same income is not taxed twice.
- We file Form T1135 where your foreign property, including US farmland and cross-border accounts, passes the $100,000 threshold, avoiding a penalty regime CRA applies whether or not any tax was actually owing.
- Where grain or livestock is marketed across the border, we determine whether the activity creates a US permanent establishment and file the treaty-based return positions that keep a marketing decision from triggering US tax.
- We handle the exposure that comes with a child or shareholder who is a US citizen, because their reporting obligations reach into a Canadian farm corporation in ways most farm families discover far too late.
- We reconcile the US and Canadian returns so foreign tax credits actually land, ensuring any US tax paid on that activity offsets Canadian tax on the same income rather than being written off as a cost.
- We bring your farm forward on custom work income where HST was never charged, because a farm that has been doing a neighbour’s combining for years has been making taxable supplies the whole time.
- We disclose unreported program payments or grain settlements that never reached a return, because a disclosure accepted under the general program cancels the gross-negligence penalty that can reach 50% of the tax.
- We file your VDP submission on Form RC199 with a full reconstruction from elevator settlements, marketing board statements and bank records, so a farm that fell years behind corrects the record on its own terms.
- We correct unfiled T4 slips on seasonal crew paid in cash, sparing the operation the per-slip penalties and the source deduction assessment CRA would otherwise raise once it matches the wage line.
- We confirm your disclosure is genuinely voluntary before CRA contacts you — the single condition that makes it valid — and secure the roughly 50% interest relief on the older years, turning a prosecution risk into a managed correction.

Case Studies: Farm Accounting & Tax
Guelph Cash Crop Operation — Inventory Adjustments
The problem: A Guelph cash crop operation had been filed on the cash method for years, but nobody had ever set the inventory adjustments deliberately. The result was a tax bill that lurched: a year the bins were full at year-end showed almost no income because nothing had been sold, and the following year, when two crops were marketed in the same twelve months, the whole lot landed at once. The farm paid tax at a far higher rate than the two years together warranted, purely because of when the tickets were cashed.
What we did: We rebuilt the crop inventory position at each year-end, set the optional inventory adjustment to level the two years, confirmed the mandatory adjustment where a loss required it, and documented the quantities and values behind every figure so the position holds on review.
The result:
- Income levelled across the two crop years
- Adjustments now set deliberately every year-end
- Quantities and values documented for review
Ottawa Beef Operation — The Custom Work Problem
The problem: An Ottawa beef operation had been doing custom combining and trucking for three neighbouring farms for the better part of a decade and had never charged HST on any of it, on the understanding that everything a farm sells is zero-rated. That is true of the cattle and true of the grain, and it is not true of the service. The custom work was a taxable supply the whole time, the amounts were substantial, and the exposure had been compounding quietly in the background for years.
What we did: We separated the custom work revenue from production revenue across the open and closed years, quantified the uncharged tax, and brought the operation forward through a Voluntary Disclosures Program application on Form RC199 before CRA found the pattern.
The result:
- Custom work disclosed, penalties cancelled
- Zero-rated and taxable split now billed correctly
- Input tax credits preserved throughout
Windsor Family Farm — Buildings, Fences and the Transfer
The problem: A Windsor family farm had every building it owned pooled in Class 1 at 4%, including a metal-clad machine shed and several thousand feet of fencing that belong in Class 6 at 10%. It had been claiming less than half the allowance it was entitled to for years. At the same time the owners were within a few years of handing the operation to a daughter, with no plan for the land, no test of whether the property qualified for the exemption, and no structure that would let the transfer happen without a tax bill nobody could fund.
What we did: We rebuilt the capital cost schedule and moved the buildings and fences into Class 6, then mapped the succession: which assets sit personally, which qualify, and how the ITA subsection 73(3) rollover and the $1.25M exemption fit together on this farm.
The result:
- Buildings and fences reclassified to Class 6
- Allowance claimed at 10% rather than 4%
- Succession mapped with years of runway left
