CRA Targets Convenience Stores Because 40% of Your Revenue Is Cash and They Know Exactly How Much You Should Be Reporting

Convenience stores sit at the top of CRA's cash-business audit list alongside restaurants and gas stations. CRA uses purchase-markup analysis to estimate what your sales should be based on what you bought from suppliers. If you purchased $280,000 in inventory from your wholesalers and your markup should be 30% to 45%, CRA expects to see $364,000 to $406,000 in reported revenue. If you reported $310,000, CRA flags the gap as unreported cash income and sends an auditor. They also cross-reference your OLG lottery commission statements, tobacco purchase records from suppliers, and ATM transaction volumes to build a complete picture of your store's activity.

We file corporate tax returns for convenience stores across Ontario and Canada. T2 filing, cash reconciliation systems, lottery commission tracking, HST on mixed-rate products, inventory management, CRA audit defence and year-end planning. From $400. AFFORDABLE flat fees. No hourly billing.

How We Handle Corporate Tax for Convenience Stores

A 6-step process built for cash-intensive retail. AFFORDABLE flat fees.

1

Revenue Stream Separation

A convenience store has 6 to 10 revenue streams in one location. Each must be tracked separately.

  • General merchandise sales (snacks, drinks, household items) tracked by POS category.
  • Tobacco sales tracked separately. Supplier purchase records matched to sales.
  • Lottery commissions from OLG reconciled to monthly commission statements.
  • Scratch ticket sales and inventory tracked. Unsold tickets are not revenue.
  • ATM commissions, money order fees, phone card sales and bill payment commissions separated.
2

Cash Reconciliation System

CRA's number one audit tool for convenience stores is the cash gap analysis.

  • Daily Z-tape from POS system retained and filed. Missing Z-tapes = assumed cash suppression.
  • Cash register opening and closing balances logged daily.
  • Bank deposits matched to daily sales. Variance tracked and explained.
  • Cash purchases (if any) documented with receipts and logged separately.
  • Weekly cash reconciliation summary prepared for the audit file.
3

HST Classification: Zero-Rated vs Taxable

Convenience stores sell hundreds of products at different HST rates. One classification error multiplied across thousands of transactions creates a massive reassessment.

  • Basic groceries (milk, bread, eggs, canned goods, raw meat): zero-rated (0%).
  • Snack foods (chips, candy, granola bars, cookies): taxable at 13% HST.
  • Carbonated drinks, energy drinks, bottled water (single serve): taxable at 13%.
  • Tobacco products: taxable at 13% HST plus Ontario tobacco tax embedded in price.
  • Prepared food (hot dogs, sandwiches, heated items): taxable at 13%.
4

Inventory Management and COGS

CRA uses purchase-markup to estimate your sales. Your COGS must be bulletproof.

  • Opening inventory + purchases minus closing inventory = COGS. Tracked by category.
  • Year-end physical inventory count reconciled to accounting records.
  • Tobacco inventory counted separately. High-value, high-shrinkage category.
  • Lottery scratch ticket inventory tracked. Unsold tickets are inventory, not expense.
  • Inventory shrinkage (theft, damage, expiry) documented and deducted.
5

T2 Filing with Multi-Stream Revenue

Your T2 must show CRA that every dollar of revenue is accounted for.

  • NTR financial statements with convenience store chart of accounts.
  • Revenue broken out: merchandise, tobacco, lottery, ATM, other commissions.
  • COGS broken out by product category. Markup ratio documented.
  • CCA on store equipment, POS system, coolers, shelving, signage.
  • Salary-dividend split optimized for owner. SBD threshold managed.
6

CRA Audit Defence Preparation

We prepare your file as if CRA is already coming. Because for convenience stores, they usually are.

  • Purchase-markup analysis completed internally before CRA does it.
  • Supplier purchase records matched to reported COGS. No gaps.
  • OLG commission statements reconciled to reported lottery income.
  • Net worth analysis reviewed: owner's personal assets and lifestyle consistent with reported income.
  • Complete audit file maintained: Z-tapes, invoices, cash logs, bank deposits for 6 years.

Case Studies: Convenience Store Corporate Tax Filing

Convenience Store, Scarborough ($520K Revenue, CRA Audit)

CRA audited using purchase-markup analysis and assessed $78,000 in unreported cash income. Previous records were incomplete with missing Z-tapes. We reconstructed daily sales from POS data, reconciled supplier purchases to reported COGS, demonstrated that the 28% markup was correct for the product mix, and provided documented shrinkage of $12,000. CRA reduced the assessment from $78,000 to $6,200. Get Started →

$78,000 CRA audit assessment reduced to $6,200.

Variety Store, Brampton ($340K Revenue)

Family-run variety store with no separation between revenue streams. Lottery commissions, tobacco sales and general merchandise all lumped into one category. HST filed incorrectly (all sales at 13%). We separated revenue streams, corrected HST (recovered $6,400 in overpaid HST on zero-rated groceries), and filed proper T2 with multi-stream COGS.

$6,400 HST recovered. Revenue streams properly separated.

Gas Station + C-Store, Mississauga ($1.4M Combined)

Gas station with attached convenience store. Fuel and store not tracked separately in the books. CRA demanded separate reporting. We implemented dual-stream bookkeeping, reconciled fuel purchases to litre sales, separated store COGS from fuel COGS, filed corrected T2 and HST returns. Tax reduction: $11,800 from proper fuel margin reporting. Bookkeeping Services →

Fuel and store separated. $11,800 tax reduction.

Corner Store, North York ($210K Revenue, Net Worth)

CRA net worth assessment flagged the owner for purchasing a $52,000 vehicle while reporting $38,000 personal income. We demonstrated the vehicle was a corporate asset used 80% for business, claimed CCA, documented the financing through the corporation, and showed reported income was accurate. Net worth assessment withdrawn.

Net worth assessment withdrawn. Vehicle properly documented as corporate asset.

Frequently Asked Questions: Convenience Store Tax Filing

How much does T2 filing cost for a convenience store?
From $400 for under $100K revenue. $2,450 for $100K to $500K. $4,900 for $500K to $1.5M. Fixed fee. Know Your Exact Fee →
Why does CRA audit convenience stores?
High cash volume, supplier purchase data available to CRA, tobacco tracking, lottery commission records. CRA uses purchase-markup analysis to estimate sales and flags stores that report less.
What is a purchase-markup analysis?
CRA takes your supplier purchase total, applies the expected industry markup (30% to 45% for convenience stores), and compares it to your reported sales. If reported sales are lower, CRA assumes unreported cash income.
Are lottery ticket sales subject to HST?
No. Lottery ticket sales are HST-exempt. However, your lottery commission income from OLG is taxable business income reported on your T2.
How do I track lottery commissions?
OLG issues monthly commission statements. We reconcile these to your reported income. Every dollar of commission must appear on your T2. CRA receives the same OLG data.
Are scratch tickets inventory or expense?
Inventory. Unsold scratch tickets at year-end are an asset, not an expense. Only sold or expired tickets flow through COGS. Physical count required at year-end.
Is milk and bread zero-rated?
Yes. Basic groceries including milk, bread, eggs, canned goods and raw meat are zero-rated (0% HST). You collect no HST but claim ITCs on related business expenses.
Are chips and candy taxable?
Yes. Snack foods (chips, candy, cookies, granola bars, popcorn, ice cream) are taxable at 13% HST. CRA has a specific list defining snack foods.
Is tobacco subject to HST?
Yes. 13% HST applies to tobacco products on top of the embedded provincial tobacco tax. Your POS must charge HST on all tobacco sales.
Do I need daily Z-tapes?
Yes. CRA requires daily POS Z-tapes for 6 years. Missing Z-tapes in a convenience store audit is interpreted as cash suppression. Keep them organized by date.
What is a net worth assessment?
CRA compares your reported personal income to your personal assets, spending and lifestyle. If your lifestyle exceeds what your reported income could support, CRA assesses the gap as unreported income.
How do I prove my cash sales are correct?
Daily Z-tapes, cash register logs (opening/closing balances), bank deposit records, and internal purchase-markup analysis. The more documentation, the stronger the defence.
What CCA can I claim on store equipment?
Coolers and freezers (Class 8, 20%). POS system (Class 50, 55%). Shelving and fixtures (Class 8, 20%). Security cameras (Class 8, 20%). Signage (Class 8, 20%).
Should I pay myself salary or dividends?
Usually both. Salary for RRSP room. Dividends for CPP savings. Convenience store cash flow patterns allow flexible dividend timing. Tax Planning →
What about ATM commission income?
ATM commissions are taxable business income. Track the monthly or quarterly statements from the ATM provider and report as a separate revenue stream on the T2.
How do I handle inventory shrinkage?
Document shrinkage (theft, damage, expiry) at each inventory count. Shrinkage is a deductible cost but must be supported by records. CRA expects reasonable shrinkage rates for your store type.
What is the T2 deadline?
6 months after fiscal year-end. Payment due 2 months (3 if SBD eligible). T2 Filing →
Do I need a separate bank account?
Yes. Corporate and personal funds must be completely separate. All store revenue deposited into the corporate account. Personal draws through salary or dividend only.
What about phone card and bill payment commissions?
All commissions (phone cards, bill payments, money orders, Western Union) are taxable income. Track each commission source separately for CRA reporting.
Can I claim the small business deduction?
Yes if your corporation is a CCPC with active business income under $500,000. Combined Ontario rate drops from 26.5% to 12.2%.
What if I own a gas station with a convenience store?
Fuel and store must be tracked as separate revenue streams. Different COGS margins. Different HST treatment. We implement dual-stream bookkeeping for combined operations.
How do I handle newspaper returns?
Unsold newspapers returned to the distributor are not revenue and not COGS. Track net purchases (purchased minus returned). Only net amount flows through COGS.
What about family members working in the store?
Family members must be paid reasonable wages for actual work performed. Wages must be documented with time records. CRA disallows wages to family members with no actual duties.
Do I need monthly bookkeeping?
Strongly recommended for convenience stores. Monthly reconciliation catches cash variances, inventory discrepancies and HST errors. From $150/month. HST and T2 FREE. Bookkeeping →
What POS systems do you work with?
We work with all major POS systems: Clover, Square, Lightspeed, NCR and custom systems. We integrate daily sales data into QuickBooks or Xero.
Can I carry losses forward?
Yes. Non-capital losses forward 20 years, back 3. Startup losses or COVID-era losses offset current profits.
What if I have unfiled T2 returns?
Past account cleanup from $499/year. Catch-up bookkeeping, inventory reconstruction, T2 filing and penalty relief. Past Account Cleanup →
Do you serve multiple convenience store locations?
Yes. Consolidated bookkeeping, per-location P&L, inventory tracking by store and combined T2 filing. Franchise Accounting →
